Alpaca Canada Futurity Guidelines
Huacaya & Suri Alpacas
November 20-22, 2009

1.
All alpacas to be entered in the Futurity must be registered
with the Canadian Llama and Alpaca Association (CLAA). Registered Junior,
Yearling and Two-year old offspring of the 2009 Subscribed Studs are
eligible for the futurity.
Please note:
Progeny born resulting from the breeding purchased in the 2007 Futurity Stud
Auction are eligible to be shown in the 2009 Futurity if they were not old
enough to be shown in 2008. Cria resulting from the breeding
purchased in the 2008 Futurity Stud Auction are eligible as Juniors if born
on or before May 21, 2009. This does not apply to stud owners who
purchased their own herdsire’s breeding in the 2007 and 2008 auction.
Only alpacas from 6 months to under 36 months of age at the date of the
Futurity with a minimum of 2” fleece growth may enter the futurity.

All animals must be in good health, free of communicable
diseases, current in their inoculations and deworming. A copy of the
alpaca’s CLAA certificate of registration and copy of BVD PI lab test
results must be included with entry form. A copy of both must be readily
available at alpaca check-in for futurity committee if required. Alpacas
must be entered in the name of the registered owner. All alpaca entries
will be inspected prior to the futurity by the chief steward and in the
presence of the owner or his nominated representative for:
a. general health and soundness
b. microchip matching
registration
c. correct colour, gender and age and fleece type for class
entered
d. minimum mid side fleece length 2 inches
e. deliberate shaping or clipping

For the 2009 futurity, eligible Juniors (6 months to under 12
months) are born from November 22, 2008 to May 21, 2009. Eligible Yearlings
(12 months to under 24 months) are born from November 22, 2007 - November
21, 2008. Eligible Two-year olds (24 months to under 36 months) are born
from November 22, 2006 to November 21, 2007.
Where possible, entries will be split into classes by
colour, age and gender. The colour classes will be:

White
b.
Light
(includes
beige and light fawn)
c.
Fawn
(includes
medium and dark fawn)
d.
Brown
(includes
light, medium and dark brown)
e.
Black
(bay black
and black)
f.
Grey
(rose and
silver grey)
g. Multi
(Alpacas which exhibit two or more colours
that are distinct and immediately visible and are situated on the
alpaca below the head and above the knees)
If an alpaca has a single spot less than 3 cm in diameter below the head and
above the knees, the alpaca will go into its predominant colour class.
A
current CLAA colour chart shall be used for colour differentiation.
When a colour falls in between 2 colours on the colour chart it will
be placed in the darker of the 2 colours.
(If not enough Multi and Grey entries are received to
make up a class, multi coloured alpacas will go into the colour category of
the major colour of their fleece coverage (above the knee and below the
head) and greys will be added to the dark category.)
Please include a fibre sample from each coloured
alpaca entered (not required for white animals). For Multis, please send
a photograph that clearly shows the area with multiple colours.
Huacaya
- Minimum class size will be three and maximum class size will be 14.
Suri
– no minimum class size, no colour championship
round unless six (6) total entries.
Classes will be set by futurity committee to award as
much prize money to as many class entries as possible. Prize money will be
paid to at least 50% of each class. Ribbons will be awarded to 4th
place.
The futurity committee reserves the right to:

place entries in the appropriate colour class
·
adjust the classes based on the number of entries
·
adjust colour class boundaries.
Verbal directions from the futurity committee take
precedence over the Futurity Program.
Number of entries permitting, first and second place
alpacas will return for the colour champion classes. The Colour Champions
will compete for one Supreme Champion. Judge’s decision shall be final.

Alpaca judging is scored as Fleece 60% and Conformation 40%.
5.
All futurity entries with payment are to be submitted to Suelaine
Poot at the address given on the alpaca entry form by October 15, 2009.
Late futurity entries with payment will be accepted up to October 23,
2009. No refunds will be made for
entries withdrawn after October 23, 2009.
Prior
to October 15 the entry
fee is $ 75 per alpaca and $25 per pen. The late entry fee is $150 per
alpaca and $50 per pen.
6.
Time permitting there will be a short spectators-hands on
between each class.
7.
No ranch, farm, person’s or alpaca’s logo or name shall be
exhibited on the alpaca or handler in the ring when showing. No open toed
shoes or sandals. Attire shall be white top and black bottom without any
distracting adornments. Show halter and lead shall be without adornments and
if possible black.
8. Alpacas
are required to be on site on Friday November 20 by 6pm, and remain until
the Supreme Champion is announced. ALL alpacas on premises need to
provide proof of BVD PI negative.
9.
Exhibitors wishing to withdraw alpacas previously entered into a class
following commencement of judging on Saturday Nov 21 may only do so for
veterinary or welfare reasons and must be approved by the Chief Steward.
Withdrawals for any other reason or without the Chief Steward’s permission
will render ALL of the exhibitors’ entries invalid, prize money will be
withdrawn and placings removed.
10. Futurity
Management reserves the right to determine any point not covered above,
which may be deemed necessary for the interest of the futurity.
