Fibre Design Competition 2007

The winning designs of the 1st Alpaca Canada Knitwear Competition were announced in April 2007 at the CNASF in Red Deer. There was excitement as the winning designs were announced and technical drawings displayed.

The objectives of the Knitwear Competition are as follows:

  1. To increase knowledge of both committee members and the membership at large, regarding the steps involved in getting an end-product into the high-end commercial fashion arena where it can generate interest in and a demand for a 'made in Canada' trade-marked alpaca garment;
  2. To educate alpaca owners and breeders about the exciting possibilities afforded by the Canadian fashion industry and motivate them to produce quality fleece appropriate for high-end Canadian fashions;
  3. To plant "seeds of Canadian alpaca" within the minds of the future designers in the Canadian fashion industry; and
  4. To promote Canadian alpaca to the general consumer.

The 1st Alpaca Canada Knitwear Competition was offered exclusively to students of the prestigious Ryerson School of Fashion in Toronto. The Alpaca Canada Fibre and Products committee are grateful to the assistance of the staff of Ryerson, including Lucia Dell'Agnese and Jill Harrop, and Fashion Marketing consultant Kirsten Mogg.

Canadian Alpaca yarn was provided to the students to construct the winning designs. These garments are scheduled to be displayed at the Alpaca Canada conference in September 2007. Alpaca Canada has the right to these garments for a 12 month period to promote the Canadian alpaca fibre industry, as well as the winning student designers.

As you can see from the technical design drawings and photographs of the finished garments, the Canadian Fashion scene is ripe to celebrate with such talented young designers paired with the availability of such luxurious, fine yarns made of Canadian alpaca fibre.
